Artist's Comments

Hahaha... those of you who aren't into photojournalism, I know must be bored with my recent photographs. Here, I present you with a flower. Hope it will kill your boredom of me... LOL However, you'll have to bear with me for the moment, because I've just taken lots and lots and lotssss of journalism photographs. I just love capturing the details of human expression just like capturing the details of a beautiful tiny flower like this ;-)

WOW! This picture just amazed me. The bright colors, the clearness of the flower ... just amazing. I love how the "inside" of the flower looks. It's so clear. I also like the contrast between the yellow and the dark nearly black colors. The touch of red or orange also adds some warmness to the picture. It looks like everything on the picture flows into the center of the picture. It looks like all energy would come from there.
For me the edges of the petals are a bit to blurred but I guess that's a matter of opinion anyway.
Alltogether a great picture, one that amazed me and took my breath away.

Thank you so much, and also, of course for the fave. I appreciate that very much.
Unlike the "Pink Beauty-2" flower which's a tree's flower, this flower is a grass flower. It grows flat on the ground and also hovered by big trees. Therefore, the wind didn't affect it much and as a result I could get more details. Logically, I should have gotten more details for "Pink Beauty-2", because the size of that flower was I think, 10 times this flower. Maybe more. The bigger the subject is, the easier it should be to get details. However... terms and conditions applied... :D

Of course you may, my friend!
First, the leaves of this flower were dark green. This is the basic thing that helped a lot in creating a black background. And then, the depth of field I chose, made the dark green leaves blurred and leaving the flower standing out.

That was what I did with the camera. Oh ya, I shot it in RAW format. Afterwards, I retouched it using Photoshop CS4. There, I moved a little the slide bar of the feature "blacks". This feature helps bring details more vivid. But, it also makes blurred backgrounds look darker (= blacker).

I don't remember exactly whether I lowered the exposure. Anyway, if you lower the exposure, the photo will tend to look darker and vice versa when you to turn it up.

The other thing that helped me create this black background is by adjusting the curves. I just played with the curves, pulling up and down, until I get the exact amount I desire.

You can still do this even you don't shoot with RAW format. Of course, you might not be able to adjust the exposure value and add blacks, but you can still adjust the curves. This helps a lot. I used to do that when I shot with a pocket camera [link]://automidori.deviantart.com/art/Refreshed-Pink-94697471

If there are still some spots, I use black brush to make the background even.

HOWEVER, if you are really good, a black background can be done in an instant thru the camera shot alone. I've seen a tutor during a workshop do that. Was really amazing! The background was actually abrupt and in different colors, but the subject stood up alone in total black background. So, with good skill of combining exposure level, depth of field, speed, no need anymore to adjust curves in Photoshop. I'm still on my way to such a skill and that's my ultimate dream as a photographer :-)

wow thanks, that was actually the first time that I understood that, many people tried to teach me but now I really found out how to do it, thanks so much

Well, that's nice thing hear from you. I think I've never felt that I have nothing to submit. Most of the time I have to hold myself not to be too excited submitting too many photographs at a time. One day, someone (I'm not going to mention the name, because you'll know.) suggested me to be more careful and selective in submitting my work just as she does. I answered that the problem is I take pictures almost every day. I so love photography -- more than my job. And... from all the shots I've made, if I don't select carefully, I would now already have thousands of deviations in dA. I just didn't have the heart to say bluntly to her, "If you have only 10 and you submit 2, that's selective. But, if you have 100 and you submit 10, that's also selective."
:iconsartassa22:
hehe wow I am jealous, I didn't take pictures for quite a while and I would love to be as creative as you are but whoever suggested that to you, it's true that someone shouldn#t submit more than about 5-10 deviantions a day (at least that's my opinion)
When I come back from a trip it's really hard to be careful not to do that, as you've said cause you are so proud on all your pictures, hehe I can really understand you!
